A lecture by Rowan Wetti, PhD student in biological anthropology, University of Bordeaux
Archaeogenetics is a recently emerging discipline that sheds new light on the understanding of past societies based on ancient DNA.
The specific characteristics of this DNA – fragmentation, low quantities and potential contamination – pose a number of methodological challenges.
We will begin by tracing the development of sequencing techniques, from the extraction of DNA from an Egyptian mummy in 1985 to current high-throughput sequencing technologies, which have paved the way for increasingly detailed and robust studies.
Through case studies, we will show how the study of ancient DNA sheds light on our understanding of past societies. These examples will illustrate the contribution of a resolutely interdisciplinary approach.
