A medieval fortress dating from the late 12th century and remodelled in the 19th century, the Berrye Fortress is situated on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by dry moats; the Berrye Fortress has an organically farmed vineyard producing wines under the Saumur and Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame appellations.
A fine example of built heritage: admire the monumental cave dwellings carved into the tuffeau stone, the developed underground network and the architectural diversity of this site, which is listed as a Historic Monument. It was a winner of the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2023.
Tours can be arranged upon booking, followed by wine-tasting sessions featuring the fortress’s wines.
