Mazeuil

Mazeuil, which means “house” in Latin, is a village that was built on the plain on the banks of the Dive and its tributary La Roche Bourreau around the church of Saint-Hilaire. During the Wars of Religion, the king’s brother, the future Henry III, spent the night in the village before going into battle against Coligny’s Protestant army on 3 October 1569, on the plains around Moncontour. Mazeuil is one of the most authentic villages in the Poitou region. The rural heritage is close at hand: windmill, washhouse, stone bridge, fortified farmhouse, traditional houses, well, spring or even low walls of galuches…Here are the memories of peasant life of yesteryear.
