Moncontour

The keep of Moncontour towers proudly above the Dive valley. Moncontour, a battlefield situated between the Duchy of Aquitaine and Anjou, gained importance in the 11th century with the construction of its first fortress. From Foulque Nerra to Coligny and Du Guesclin, some of the greatest figures in French history have sealed their destinies here. Listed as a “Station Verte” (Green Resort) since 2017, France’s first ecotourism label, take a gentle stroll through Moncontour and discover its authentic, unspoilt landscapes. The river Dive is omnipresent here, and the mills, bridges, drinking troughs and, above all, the wash-houses – of which there were more than 100 in the village alone – give the town an unrivalled charm. The leisure centre and its lake also offer many other activities: swimming, canoeing, paddles, waterski lift, mini-golf…
