Poitiers, an easy getaway from the Loudunais region

Poitiers is one of those cities that surprises as soon as you set foot in it. Accessible and lively, with a mix of ancient history and contemporary energy, it’s the ideal playground for a family day out. From the Pays Loudunais, it’s a stress-free day out. The cool attitude continues when you arrive in Poitiers, a city on a human scale where it’s easy to get around and where one discovery follows another without rushing the pace. It’s a great way to combine excitement, culture and relaxation.

It’s hard to start anywhere else than Futuroscope, the park that immediately sets the tone. Here, everything seems to be designed for fun together, from immersive attractions to shows that play with images, sound and imagination. After this futuristic interlude, Poitiers gently brings its feet back to the ground with its rich and accessible heritage. Without turning the visit into a lecture, it adds a historical thread that the whole tribe will love to follow.

As you follow in the footsteps of Charles Martel, your steps are sure to lead you to the heart of the town centre, where thechurch of Notre-Dame-la-Grande stands. The building remains a must-see. Its Romanesque façade is an eye-catcher, its sculptures tell a thousand details and the calm interior contrasts pleasantly with the bustle outside. The themes vary throughout the year: astronomy with sessions in the planetarium, digital technology with workshops to understand how AI works, social sciences, the environment, energy, illusions, weather… something to interest children and adults alike. Your little ones are sure to love the interactive experiments, the visual installations and the little manipulations that are almost like playing with an artist.

As well as being exciting, theEspace Mendès France is also a practical place for families. You’ll find plenty of activities available free of charge (others can be booked in advance), and the mediators are there to explain things without jargon. In one hour or three, you’ll come away with the feeling that you’ve learned something effortlessly. And that, clearly, is our definition of a 100% successful experience!

Fresh air around Poitiers

As the day progresses, a short diversions to the surrounding area provides a change of scenery. In Chauvigny, you can explore the medieval streets, ramparts and hilltops at your own pace. There are plenty of vantage points and the walk can be done at your own pace.

Further south, Ligugé marks a peaceful stop-off on the Chemin de Saint-Martin. Walkers appreciate the calm of the site, as do parents. It’s the kind of stop-off that refocuses and does you good after a busy day.
