When people ask me why I love dragging my trainers around the Pays Loudunais, I answer: “there are so many unmissable nuggets! What’s more, it’s the perfect place to unplug. Here, you can forget about your ‘just because’ to-do lists and let yourself be carried away by your own personal favourites. Whether you’re here for the day or for a big break, this area has that rare gift of making you go into “so good in PL’S” mode at the snap of a finger.
A visual slap in the face at Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers
This is undoubtedly the most sensational place in the area. Imagine a majestic ruin, worthy of a film set, where nature has reclaimed its rights with unbridled elegance. Trees inviting themselves into the living rooms, reflections on the water… it’s poetic, wild and incredibly romantic. It’s the dream spot for anyone who loves mystical atmospheres and places that tell a story of rebirth.

Disconnect at Domaine de Roiffé
If you need a change of scenery and a feeling of serenity, this is my favourite refuge. It’s not just a place to sleep, it’s an atmosphere. You can take a break at the Spa O’Clair, try your hand at golf, discover the equestrian centre or simply get lost in the grounds. It’s the luxury of simplicity and well-being without the fuss.

The not-to-be-missed Château de Monts sur Guesnes
For a total immersion in the past without the dust, go straight here. The story ofEleanor of Aquitaine becomes a living, interactive adventure. You quickly get hooked on the puzzles and reconstructions. It’s a truly unique experience that reconciles everyone with fortified castles.

A wild break at Center Parcs Le Bois aux Daims
Sleeping in a house perched in the trees with fallow deer roaming just below is a totally different experience. It’s one of the green lungs of the region, where you really feel at one with nature.

Get some height at the Tour Carrée in Loudun
Climb the steps of this 31-metre tower and you’ll be treated to a sensational panoramic view of the whole city. At the bottom, the medieval-inspired garden is a haven of peace where you can stroll among medicinal plants and fruit trees. This is where the learned and historic side of the Loudunais region comes into its own. But don’t stop there!
Loudun, listed as one of the “Most Beautiful Detours in France”, is a town that has lived a thousand lives. On the way down, wander through the old streets to discover the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Croix and the Porte du Martray, the only survivor of the medieval fortifications. And don’t forget the Musée Renaudot. This is the birthplace of Théophraste Renaudot, a true 17th-century “well of science”: a philanthropic doctor, he is best known as the father of French journalism with the creation of La Gazette. Visiting his house is like plunging into a period herbalist’s shop and discovering the first printing presses. It’s an essential step towards understanding the city’s inquisitive and visionary spirit!

A slow tourism interlude at Les Sentes de Fondoire
At Les Sentes de Fondoire, slow tourism is practised in its purest form. You walk along the wash-houses, follow the shady little paths, and finally breathe. It’s simple and costs nothing except a little time. It’s my favourite walk for a gentle end to a holiday and to leave with a lighter spirit.
