Neolithic
Traces of the Neolithic period in the Pays Loudunais are as intriguing as they are fascinating. They are essentially stones that were already there long before the castles and villages. But not just any stones! These are the stones that the first inhabitants of the Pays Loudunais built several thousand years ago, by the sweat of their hands. You don’t have to be an archaeologist to marvel at them!
As you stroll through the countryside, you sometimes come across these stone giants, standing there since the dawn of time. Dolmens, menhirs or so-called “crazy stones”: each one has its own personality, its own mystery. Some seem to watch over the fields, others hide in the woods, as if they have chosen to remain discreet. We inevitably wonder: how did these blocks end up there? Why in this place? And above all, by whom?
You don’t need an answer to appreciate the moment. These are places that invite you to look up, to imagine what life was like before, to tell stories to your children. Some visitors see them as altars, others as markers for reading the sky… everyone finds a bit of magic here.
Between Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, these megaliths are as much a part of the scenery as the valleys and vineyards. They are a reminder that the earth has a memory here, and that sometimes all it takes is a bend in the road to awaken it.
So, the next time you see a large stone lying in a field, don’t drive on too fast. It may have survived 5,000 years just to show you that back then, we were already in PL’S.
